The 5× Shortcut
Multiply by 5 = multiply by 10 and halve. 68 × 5: 68 × 10 = 680, ÷2 = 340. Works instantly for any number and is much faster than traditional multiplication.
Squares Near 50
For numbers near 50: (50+n)² = 2500 + 100n + n². So 52² = 2500 + 200 + 4 = 2704. 47² = 2500 - 300 + 9 = 2209. Once memorized, this covers a useful range without calculation.
Multiply Two Numbers Near 100
96 × 97: Find how far each is from 100 (4 and 3). Subtract either deficit from the other number: 96-3=93 or 97-4=93. Multiply the deficits: 4×3=12. Answer: 9312. Works for any numbers close to 100.

Round and Adjust
347 + 289: Round 289 to 290, add: 347+290=637, subtract 1: 636. Or round 347 to 350, add 289 = 639, subtract 3: 636. Rounding to the nearest 10 makes mental addition trivial.
Left-to-Right Addition
Traditional addition goes right-to-left (units first). Mental math works better left-to-right. 456 + 278: 400+200=600, 50+70=120 (total 720), 6+8=14 (total 734). Each step is simple and the running total is always in range.
Division Tricks
Divide by 5 Instantly
Divide by 5 = multiply by 2 and divide by 10. 840 ÷ 5: 840 × 2 = 1680, ÷10 = 168. Always faster than direct division.
Divisibility Rules
Quickly check if a number is divisible: by 3 (sum of digits divisible by 3), by 4 (last two digits divisible by 4), by 6 (divisible by both 2 and 3), by 9 (sum of digits divisible by 9). These eliminate most division before you start.
